I've noticed some white dudes, usually rednecky or blue collar lower-class whites call each other brother. So, not sure if there is anything shady there.

Now if they tried to "slang it up" by saying "BROTHA" and really emphasize that THA, then they are probably mocking you. Otherwise, I notice they use the word brother with folks they try to be chummy with like "Hey brother how is it going" type of thing.
