They specifically went away from casting a Chinese actor due to some of the more stereotypical elements of "The Mandarin". Both Jon Faveru and Shane Black made comments regarding The mandarin's more "problematic" elements.

It should also be noted that Disney and Marvel are co-producing this film with a chinese company. DMG entertain will co finance and distribute the film in China.

Marvel is definitely going to be getting more criticism for the lack of minority representation in their films. Having a few Black and Asian sidekicks isn't going to cut it.

*edit*

Also Ben Kingsly is half Indian (South Asian)

The fact is the Character is Chinese, Period. They are co-financing it with a Chinese company so I don't see the excuse. Let's not act like Hollywood doesn't have a strong history of Whitewashing Characters (The Last Airbender, Dragon Ball, Prince of Persia). Ben is a great actor, nobody is questioning that, I'm questioning Hollywood's constant whitewashing, it's getting ridiculous now. Chow Yung Fat could of played the role. Jet Li could of played the role. Ken Wantanbe could of played the role. There were plenty of Asian actors out there they could of gotten for the role. The more people excuse it the more the problem will continue.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for them to cast an Asian actor and make the character be completely devoid of the racist stuff that was done with him back in the 1960s?
Ken Watanabe, Chow Yun Fat, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Hiroyuki Sanada, John Lone, Gordon Liu, Daniel Dae Kim and Russell Wong would have been perfectly acceptable actors to be tasked woth removing any of the racial stigma that the comic have hung around the neck of the character.

It's 2012 and Hollywood is still Whitewashing characters. Your telling me you couldn't find a Chinese Actor to play the Mandarin? Really Hollywood? SMH:

Outside of that, I like the trailer. Movie looks really depressing and Dark for Tony. Looks like he's going to lose most of the movie only to come back and win the day. I also like how Shane Black who's a REAL ACTION writer (Lethal Weapon, The Last Boyscout, Long Kiss Goodnight) not only wrote it but directed it. Looks solid. But this whitewashing thing has to stop. Thank God "The Wolverine" actually has a Japanese actor playing the Silver Samurai.

IM SO fukkING MAD THEY DIDN'T JUST CAST KEN WATANABE AS THE MANDARIN.

it was that simple. that's all they had to do. w.e. though

I agree, I don't see the excuse "Oh it was stereotypical in the comics". That doesn't mean you write the role the same as it was back then. You update to fit modern times. Again I think the movie looks really good but I cannot continue to give Hollywood a pass for this clear racism. It's getting out of control. Just cause it's Ben Kensley who's a great actor doesn't change sh!t for me. The could of gotten an Asian actor. Let's be honest, it's not like Asians are getting a lot of roles to begin with. This could of been a great opportunity for an Asian actor but Hollywood has a problem with diversity in film. Again thankfully "The Wolverine" didn't cast a white guy to play Silver Samurai. The same struggle Blacks had to go through in Hollywood (And are still going through). Asians are still going through to even worst.
