I agree with basically everything in your OP and this one is an underrated take. Dude was one of the best parts of that whole drab era, his feud with Matt Hardy was like the best feud pre HBK/Jericho. By the time he was ready to be a maineventer in late 2008 they’d already saddled him with a losing streak gimmick and took away what made him stand out.

I still don't know how they fukked up in 2013. Punk should have been in the main event. Nobody was looking forward to seeing Cena face Rock again, especially since we all knew Cena was winning.

If they didn't want to do a triple threat, they could have had Punk face Undertaker in the main event for the title while Cena and Rock have a non-title match. According to the podcast, Punk would have walked into WrestleMania having held the title for 500 days. Undertaker could have dropped the belt that same month, then Cena wins it at Extreme Rules.
