The armors being X factor is going to be the only lame thing about the game, but you can turn them off so there's that problem fixed.

I suck at fighting games

I was trash too...once upon a time. No one starts off gawd status. Practice son, hit the training room, vs some buddies and pick a main. In fact that's my best advice, peruse all the toons you want till you find one that sticks, then learn his basic combos (youtube is your friend). The only thing I can't help you with is natural raw talent, the ability to adapt and having fast fingers.
