Lots of Indians I know, including just ones from school and shyt, consider themselves white because of their shared Caucasoid race with white people.

I haven't gotten deep into this topic with any of them, but they consider themselves the darkest shade of "white people" even if their skin actually isn't "white" as the term is generally thought of. Of course when you think about it, East Asians have white skin and no one considers them white, so it's not about the skin color to many as it is bone structure/facial features/hair etc. "White race" to many Indians seems to be synonymous with Caucasoid, not the actual color white.
