Africa has been underpopulated since the 1600's. Blame the slave trade. Think about it this way. More than 10 million Africans were shipped as slaves to the Americas. 2 million of them died on the way. Millions more died on plantations. The survivors managed to reproduce the 150,000,000 people in the Americas who have significant African ancestry.

I'd guess that Africa would have 300,000,000 extra people if the slave trade never happened.
