IDK, I'm heavy into football, but lately everything else has taken a back seat.

I don't follow Baseball or basketball nearly as heavily as I used to, but I still keep track of the hometown teams (hawks/braves).

Although I know the games I'm definitely not as hardcore as I used to be.

Casual fans are people who know the rules but nothing else, and aren't really invested in any outcomes of the games.

I think casual fans have favorite teams players. They don't necessarily watch them like that but most casual fans cling to certain teams a players. Rest of you list is spot on.

Only follows sport when a specific team is winning/attention being drawn.

Doesn't know/care about any significant history of the game outside widespread pop knowledge

Finds no need to dedicate time to watch but finds it occasionally enjoyable

Casual means not having a favorite team, and not watching or knowing the sport either. Like people who only watch the Super Bowl, the World Series, NBA Finals, only cause it's important.

Anyone who has a favorite team and follows it closely, isn't a casual. Anyone who has a favorite team and doesn't know more than a few players, or s only starts getting into once they reach the playoffs = casual.

Example: that girl who said Sanchez was he favorite player in the Giants parade while being decked in blue. And all those Yankees fans that pop outta nowhere as long as the playoffs com around.

Someone who only watches Mayweather/Pacquiao fights. (aka every journalist and ESPN who feature boxing all of a sudden)
