ward was a career 168 before beating KKK twice. canelo went up to a catch weight to fight chavez then juiced up on clenbuterol to cut fat while maintaining muscle just to controversially edge out GGG in their 2 fights. you can also argue canelo is a tougher fight than ward. seems to me GGG is just plain better than KKK. then there are rumors that GGG actually knocked KKK out in sparring...

your stars are but dust on my shoes
what amplifies kovalev vs ward 1 to me is i didnt think ward was all that sharp..in fact he was fighting kinda foolish at times....ill never forget ward doing his best sugar ray leonard impression and kovalev goes :stopitslime: and resets him with a hard jab to the face. ward bit down but i didn't it was enough plus the KD as well

I actually remember Ward looking a bit :flabbynsick: during his entire LHW campaign, makes me wonder how he handled the bulk leading up to the first Kovalev fight, and whether or not he underestimated Kovalev.

Ward did great to comeback and even make it arguable, but yeah, Kovalev had Ward looking a bit foolish early.

Honestly, that first fight is a classic.:ohlawd:

Ward won a gold medal at light heavyweight, which is contested at higher than 175lbs, no?

Plus he had like 3 or 4 fights above the super middleweight limit before he fought Kovalev.

he fought 3 people at 175 in the pros. 2 of those were him angling to get the kovalev fight and then he immediately retired. i think that makes him a career 168.
as for the olympics, even shawn porter beat usyk in amateurs. it's hard to draw conclusions from that.

Yeah, no doubt. I'm just pointing out that it's not like Kovalev lost to an undersized 168lber. Ward took his time getting used to the weight and was also accomplished as an amateur there as well.

This is a tough one. Because golovkin has more heart. But kovalev is more talented. I don’t see any way in hell golovkin woulda been able to box evenly with Andre ward like kovalev did. He gave ward the toughest 19 rounds of his life. But ward was just too great when it came down to it.

But I don’t see ward having that type of struggle with golovkin. He woulda beat him comfortably on some 9-3, 10-2 shyt. Golovkin always had the luxury of being the bigger man. That’s why he could just press forward on everybody. But when he finally started facing more talented guys who actually stood their ground we seen how limited he really was. Kovalev had more dimensions to his game but he didn’t have golovkin’s toughness. Kovalev can be broken. I don’t see golovkin ever being broken. He might get knocked the fukk out but I don’t see him ever giving up. I don’t like the muthafukker but he’s one of the toughest guys of his era. That’s why a mythical matchup between him and kovalev is really tough to call. I lean towards kovalev being able to outbox him. Off pure skill set kovalev is just the more complete fighter :yeshrug:

GGG. An under 30 GGG would have clobbered Canelo IMO.
And todays Canelo woulda clobbered any version of golovkin:yeshrug:….canelo’s main issue back then was his stamina. That’s not the case anymore. Golovkin was the same guy he always was when he faced canelo. It’s not a coincidence that he started looking vulnerable as soon as he stepped up in competition. He just hadn’t faced anybody who could expose his flaws yet. That wasn’t age. It was just circumstance.

He wasn’t facing David lemiuex and Dominic wade anymore. He was finally facing guys who were legit high level boxers. And it showed. You gotta give golovkin credit cause he still took canelo to the brink. But that version of canelo woulda gotten schooled by kovalev. No controversy. No close calls. Just flat out beat. He woulda made canelo pay when he got gassed in a way golovkin wasn’t able to. And that goes back to him being a limited fighter. Once he faced guys who could box with him and actually stand their ground his power punch activity went down the drain. You seen the doubt creep in and he became overly dependent on his jab. So yea. I gotta go with kovalev. Golovkin is better in the all time rankings though :yeshrug:
