NYPD officer suspended for trying to intervene in the drunk driving arrest of her brother-in-law in New Jersey
A rookie NYPD officer who made headlines last year for giving her supervising lieutenant a lap dance at a holiday party has been suspended for trying to intervene in the drunk driving arrest of her brother-in-law in New Jersey.
Police Officer Vera Mekuli, 27, who joined the force in 2021, was suspended on Friday after she berated Garden State police for arresting her relative, who came to the attention of state troopers when they saw him urinating on the side of a highway on May 8.
Mekuli showed up at the New Jersey State Police Totowa barracks at 2 a.m. the same day, wearing a dress and barefoot. She identified herself as a police officer and demanded to know why her brother-in-law was arrested.
When the arresting officers began to lay out the information about the detention, Mekuli became belligerent and started recording officers with her phone.
“Officer Mekuli immediately began to question the validity of the arrest,’ according to a report reviewed by the Daily News.
Mekuli, who joined the force last year and is working under probationary status, is assigned to the 44th Precinct.
Last year, videos of the newbie cop circulated in the news after she gave her supervisory lieutenant a lap dance at an NYPD holiday party.
The recording shows Lt. Nick McGarry grinning widely as Mekuli, wearing a plaid miniskirt, black crop top and knee-high boots, gyrated on his lap.
Other members of the 44th Precinct watched the show, calling out encouragement to both the rookie and the lieutenant as the officer bumped and grinded atop him. One hollered “Oh my God!” Another gawker handed the lieutenant a wad of cash.
After the incident, McGarry, who is married with children, was transferred to Transit District 12 in the Bronx.
The New Jersey State Police did not immediately respond to a request for information about the incident, and Mekuli did not answer an email regarding her interaction with the troopers.
