...instead of just waiting until the free agency and signing him then?

February 22, 2011: As part of a 3-team trade, traded by the Denver Nuggets with Renaldo Balkman, Chauncey Billups, Anthony Carter and Shelden Williams to the New York Knicks; the Denver Nuggets traded a 2015 2nd round draft pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves; the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Kosta Koufos to the Denver Nuggets; the Minnesota Timberwolves traded Corey Brewer to the New York Knicks; the New York Knicks traded Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Timofey Mozgov, cash, a 2012 2nd round draft pick, a 2013 2nd round draft pick and a 2014 1st round draft pick to the Denver Nuggets; and the New York Knicks traded Eddy Curry, Anthony Randolph and cash to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

those three with Mozgrov and Randolph maybe off the bench and the knicks swould have been scary

breh that Knicks team before Melo joined in 2010-2011, was fun and dope as fukk. Amare was killing it with those 9 straight 30 point games, and there games were fun as hell with Amare, Felton, who people thought should have made the all star team, Chandler, and Gallo was a hella cool team. But its Melo, and if you were the Knicks at the time, you had to do make that deal

The only problem I have with the deal is the fact we gave up Gallo. Gallo was the face of that team when Amare wasnt there and he was still balling with his addition. I dont even know why they didnt trade Fields instead smh. Just keep Gallo and the trade is good for me. But keep in mind the trade was basically the Knick players for Melo and Chandler.

The thirst for relevancy only bit them in the ass for the rest of that season really. Although, losing those picks DID suck( but as a Knicks fan I'm used to seeing our picks traded just cuz :manny:) But as far as depth goes, the only guy you miss out of them is Wilson Chandler and Anthony Randolph( for much needed size of the bench). Felton was just another pg who only thrived under D'antoni, Mosgov is a stiff who would've gotten less and less minutes had he stayed on the Knicks, and seeing Danilo in Denver some it seems like he's regressed in some areas.

But if we did keep those players, we wouldn't have been able to get Tyson Chandler, probably the most important player on the Knicks now. Also, when healthy, depth isn't really an issue with this team either, with the emergence of Lin, Shumpert, Novak, and the addition of J.R. Smith. so naw, there isn't any reason to regret the trade honestly.

This years team is substantially better than the team with Gallo, Chandler, Felton, etc. This thread is idiotic.

Also, I don't believe Melo was going to pass up money. He would have just signed with the Nets and then everyone would be screaming the Knicks were so dumb to choose Gallo over Melo.

The Knicks could not risk it, Melo wanted to get that deal done before the season ended.

there was little to risk regarding that.
We can all post here and debate that, but rumors were that he would be willing to sign with the nets or someone to guarantee that money. He obviously wanted the deal done before the lockout.

I did not like the trade myself because of what the knicks gave up, but I understood their position.

Melo isn't the problem on the Knicks....

It's Amare holding that team hostage for the immediate future. They will never get better because of him, and he's only going to get worse.

LOL @ 81 million left on his contract

That money was guaranteed in Denver and he didn't want it there.
