In a lot of ways, it feels like Brian De Palma is underrated as director, is he?

Does he have a Goodfellas level type of film in his filmography?

Goodfella is one of those films that's never boring to watch, no matter how many times you see it

But does De Palma have a film on that level?

I think DePalma's issue is that he didn't sustain his work into the 90s, 2000s and beyond like Scorsese did so he doesn't get that same legendary status as Martin does.
But he has some absolute classic films under his belt that are on the same level as Goodfellas.

He kinda invented the thriller with Body Double and Blowout and Hollywood took his blueprint and ran with it for a decade. I guess he couldn't pivot.

Yeah, I was wondering if that's why he's often not always mentioned alongside directors like Scorsese

Word, yeah.

Is his film Snake Eyes any good?

Yeah he was a consummate master of thrillers.
He tended to play around with the genre more too which kept his movies from having a narrative style even though you could always tell a DePalma picture.

Blowout, Body Double, Dressed To Kill, Obsession...all of those are really cool movies.

But doesn't De Palma borrow a lot from Hitchcock?
DePalma is definitely a Hitchcock fanboy and he pays homage to him in probably 80-90% of his movies but the only movie of his that was really DePalma setting out to do his version of Hitchcock was Body Double and even then he went a step further than Hitchcock would have done with the sex and nudity.

Snake Eyes is a good junk food movie but it's not a great film or anything.
If you are a Nic Cage fan it's worth checking out.
