Because he wanted to be there and they were desperate for star power in pursuit of a championship.

If they do indeed have AD + Kawhi on the roster that then becomes the foundation to build around long term. The earlier they make a bold move like that the better the return.

I highly doubt Jeanie has the balls for that.
