It seems like people automatically assume you "bumming" and just doin nothing if you live at home at 18-21. Those
things doesnt necessarily go together.

Reality is most people that age are living with their parents if they aren’t at a dorm. Even people older than that. Some people living with their parents ARE bums but nowadays there’s a lot of folks out there living a straight productive life and live with their parents to save money because it’s so expensive out here.

In this current climate if you have roommates (not including significant others) you have no business looking down on someone living with their parents. A lot of people pay rent to their parents

The key phrase is if your kids are living with you at 18, 19, 20 and etc (post high school graduation) not doing shyt productive (going to college, trade school, juco) or not working full time stacking money to get out on their own, not contributing to the household just taking...yeah you failed as a parent.

Learned a lot doing that out at 18 thing, so I’m not totally against it, but it certainly didn’t help me save money lmao.

My cousin stayed at his parents just like all these other posters and never moved out until he could buy a condo in his mid to late 20’s, so he never paid rent. Much smarter move financially.

I would say the difference is that my experience made me way hungrier than his. He’s been at the same job for like 20 years, where I’ve bounced around and worked my way up to higher earnings than him now.

Left home at 18 for college and only came back during the summer I didn't do internships. Even when I came home I worked in the summer.

I believe living on my own (even when I had roommates in college) made me more independent and also hungry. Taught me how to hustle and depend on my own. Also helped that I was the older child and my parents didn't baby me (especially my father).

Another thing folks fail to realize is a lot of times kids (especially American) want to have it both ways when they live at home. They want to be independent, come and go as they please, not contribute to the household and etc. But also live with their parents rent free. Which is the reason a lot of time there are issues in the home.

You got kids living with momma and or daddy rent free as adults. But think they ain't got to be productive, that they can do shyt adults do in the home (drink, smoke, bring the opposite gender over, come home at all times of the night and etc). When their parents check them for this behavior they then pull the I am an adult....but up in their parents house living rent free or maybe paying one bill like the water bill ( ).

Trust, I know......I grew up around immigrant kids. That is why I mentioned many and not all.

I also knew immigrant kids such as Indians, Africans and Asians fresh off the boat who stayed with momma and daddy to save their money so they could get married and buy a home.

Indian kat I went to high school with after high school worked saved up his money for about 10 years while living with momma and daddy gave his wife family like 30K to marry her and then bought his home cash.

I also know an american sista that decided to never move out from her moms home after her dad died. But she finished college got a good job, contributed to her moms home, helped around the house and was/is a productive person helping her mom.

The problem is a lot of these adults are leeching off they parents cause they don't want to grow up and move out on their own. I have known too many able body adults living off their parents or parents who got adult kids who living with them while leeching off them. Then we surprised 30 years from now Johnny and Suzzy now 50 and they still living at home with they senior citizen parents (yeah I have known some of these folks as well through my parents).

Exactly.. We all know the outlier who saved up and did this and that. But most of the people who graduated, stayed at home, and working a dead end job, ain't doing shyt productive with their time. For every one guy who stayed till 30 and got a house, there's 10 dudes in his class that's at home not doing a damn thing.
