edit: the poster below me mentioned it first but the "never going broke again" mentality also translates to going all out at restaurants, and food hoarding that's more survivalist than prepper
When I was down atrocious ( ), every time I'd get paid or reimbursed above the usual I'd splurge on food. Go out to eat, order something nice, etc.
Now that I'm comfortable and no longer check to check I treat eating good like an obligation almost. I could save a small fortune on what I spend eating out on a regular basis.

my grandparents have been taken care of and out the struggle for more than 40 years now - they still the great grandkids when they don't finish a plate
