Intelligent people can make dumb decisions. Once you start playing God, you still have to account for free will, influence, and worldly interactions.
What good is the smartest kid ever gonna do you if he uses his potential on some Bernie Madoff shyt, and ends up doing life in prison?
Or becomes the next legit serial killer with his powers of deception/intellect...
Or just generally goes astray period?
Any man with true intelligence knows that he knows nothing at all...So aside from wanting certain physical features, you'd be a dumb fukk to invest well earned dollars into this bullshyt.
In other words, you dumb as shyt, boy
I like to think that my child and a car aren't the same organic thing. If your buying a car you like, wouldn't you like to know its features and customize it with tinted windows, paint job, etc?
i came in here just to post this. there comes a point where technology will do nothing but hinder human advancement. i say we've already reached that pointIf everyone buys the "smart" gene, which doesn't exist because "intelligence" is a gigantic cluster of genes, then it would be normative. The only thing that would occur is the extinction of us non-enhanced folk.
Everyone should watch Gattaca
Perfection isn't obtainable. Create the "perfect" child and some other defects would appear.
High intelligent people do make dumb decisions sometimes--we all do--I think their potential and judgment is far greater than regular people's. They can find the answers to questions most of us can't even fathom and make money using ways most of us will never understand. And that's assuming they want to use their intellect towards money-making pursuits. Some use it to sit on Harvard professorships, making 250k year to do nothing but talk about academic material they mastered a long time ago. Others work on Wall Street and rake in millions using equations few understand and the government can't relate. And then there are the eccentric geniuses who spend their time creating jet packs and rocket ships.
Bernie Madoff wasn't a genius, he was just a smart salesman. Bill Gates is like a programming genius. The CEO of Oracle and the guy who created Apple too (not Steve Jobs, the Woznicki dude).
But as I said, intelligence doesn't = $ or even success or good luck.
I've been in prison, there are PLENTY types with the IQ level of (if not higher than) Bill Gates. Wasted potential.
And plenty with IQs lower, that are multimillionaires. The point being intelligence doesn't = success. It may or may not even equate to potential for success. That's something that (since we're having a scientific/logical discussion) could only be proved with case-by-case, scientific method-inducing research. Once again, what good is IQ gonna do you if the child is born autistic, paralyzed, blind, deaf? You have people in here wishing and praying to make ONE gene (in this case, intelligence) magnified, but in the long run, you can't control EVERY aspect of human growth and development.
Each person on this earth is a mixture of genes, circumstance, and experience...Which means in the long run, upping ONE particular facet of a human, doesn't ensure success, due to the countless other factors that contribute to the fate of an individual. In the long run, "Nature" is the ultimate equalizer. Which is wy it makes more logical AND moral sense not to fukk around with it, unless in case of medical neccessity or emergency. Just my opinion.
And if you want to zero in on the fact that I'm addressing people who want to fix ONE gene...What's to say about those who create the perfect child, with beauty, brains, phyical dominance, etc...That gets hit by a fukkin bus on his first day of school? The fukk good did all that do? Money down the drain.
Like I said, if it's physical features we're talking about...Wanting that is understandable...A lot of y'all some ugly muthafukkas But playing with all that other shyt is simply a waste of time. Be better parents, and raise your children to be the way you figure they'd turn out if you poured all of your finances into the intelligence gene. Anything else would be uncivilized.
I agree with you to a point. Circumstance will make as much of a difference in a person's life as genetics but why not tip the odds?
There are a billion little genetic tweaks and events in a persons life that lead them somewhere but we've already decided to change our environment to keep people safe. We don't allow children to ride in cars without safety seats. Doesn't seem like it but that is altering the environment so kids will grow up safe and be able to have their own kids. Why not do the same with genetic code if we have the ability to? We're growing beyond the need for nature to be the determinate factor in evolution.
Hell we can start off by eliminating Down's and MS. Why wouldn't we? Isn't there a moral imperative to eliminate harmful and very painful conditions if we can? Just because car accidents and bad things CAN happen and kill a designer kid, that doesn't mean we should shy away from making them.
Would you do it?
And if so what genes would you pick?
