Let's keep it 100. In the age of streaming, who is actually paying for BET?

You want black independent film? There's Netflix and Tubi

You want music videos? You can go on YouTube. You want black news? YouTube has that too.

The BET awards just end up feeling the same each year and artists don't need the publicity when they can post a picture of a damn blank piece of paper and fans will make that shyt go viral.

The only thing left is tradition and obligation and that's why you see people trying to shame artists into pretending to care about the awards

Award shows in general don't mean what they used to unless they're the big three (Oscars, Grammys, Emmys). Those shows have years of prestige and equity placed on them. The other ones don't mean as much for a variety of reasons.

Artists aren't going to the VMAs, either. Those used to be huge and some of the biggest events of the year happened there. As far back as 2015, you had Kanye talking about running for president. Now, they're just around for the sake of being around.

Older artists aren't showcased, emphasized like before, or dying in large numbers. Newer artists don't have the star power like previous eras or the stage presence to have memorable performances. Beyond that, with social media, artists don't need the traditional forms to get their narrative across. Back then, everyone had to play the industry game if they wanted exposure. What's the point of showing up to an awards show full of people who don't give a shyt and aren't invested?

When was the last time the American Music Awards or the Soul Train Awards meant something? Who's tuning in for those? You'll never have a moment like Whitney getting booed because a modern-day Whitney will only be seen at the Grammys, and the crowds are way more embracing of that kind of music. The people who would boo in 1987 are on social media complaining and making YouTube videos for little engagement.

All award shows have fell off in popularity. Oscars and Grammys are the only ones that are somewhat a big deal. But I think those shows being on network TV help a lot.

The VMA's fell off too in terms of popularity, Miley Cyrus grinding on Robin Thicke is the last memorable moment the VMAs had and that was in 2013 :mjlol:

Black culture is more commercial now than it’s ever been and one of the things we traded for the “optics” is the mysteriousness and exclusiveness of the culture. Everything is on display and there is no magic in seeing ARTISTS perform anymore. Half the show is dusty nikkas badly rapping over their recorded vocals. Who wants to watch that?

There used to be showmanship, choreography and the gimmick of seeing big names all in the same place (as if they all didn’t know each other) and today it’s who got popping on social media but still hasn’t mastered the stage. Why would our greats show up for that? Why would anyone who saw the greats and know what that looks like tune in?
