Fans may want it. AEW World champ Chris Jericho may hope for it. But All Elite Executive Vice-Presidents Matt & Nick Jackson have some bad news.
Reports indicating that the stipulation for Jericho’s match with Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestle Kingdom 14, Le Champeon wearing his belt to the ring, and the mentions of AEW on the English & Japanese broadcast were nothing more than promotion for the Sun., Jan. 5 event? Those all appear to be true.
The Young Bucks, who in the past have gone on record about their issues with how they were booked by New Japan, removed any doubt in an interview with ESPN West Palm yesterday (Jan. 6):
“That was just a rumor. Nothing is happening. I think [Chris] did that to get the internet to talk a bit more about the situation. The door has not opened up at all. We wish them luck in what they’re doing. A lot of our friends work in NJPW and if something came along, we’d be open, but nothing is happening right now.”
Jericho said he had AEW President Tony Khan’s blessing for the angle, and this makes it sound like maybe The Bucks weren’t in the loop on that decision?
That’s just speculation, though. The takeaway is clear. The “Forbidden Door” remains sealed tight.
