Recency bias.

MJ...Prince...hell, MF'in Madonna...were a different level of popularity. The 80's just bred different levels of stars.

The lack of accessibility made them larger than they were. Drake understands this, which is why he is somewhat reclusive compared to his peers. Difference is, he doesn't have the same level of talent that they have.

Wanna know how great MJ was?....

Name just 2 bad songs he ever made.... Hell name 1.

Drake, as great as he is, is incapable of making timeless music. If he makes a song in 2019, then it stays and dies in 2019. Nobody plays "Old Drake". You could play Thriller, which is 40 years old, from top to bottom today and nobody would tell you to turn it off.

That alone removes Drake from this blasphemous conversation.

Dude stone age tribesmen knew who Michael Jackson was. Drake is just a pop rapper with a team of writers.

In fact with the way music is fractured now it's virtually impossible for any musician to ever be that popular again.
Go anywhere in the world and they know Drake

Thing about Mike is he was groomed to be a singer from a very young age in Motown. Singing started to be background to his dancing in a way, later in life. He was breaking down barriers. Most powerful black man probably in the world at one point and wasn't even a politician, meeting with heads of state. Had the music industry in a choke hold. Nobody is going to do that again.

Every generation throws a hero at the pop charts.

The thing about Michael Jackson though, he came of age at a pivotal time in American history, particularly in terms of the social structure, along with globalization and emerging technology.

He literally grew up on TV as an avatar for the first integrated generation in the USA. The guy subtly tapped into some messianic hype for a few years and people were lining up for it. Jackson transcended his record breaking musical career and became something almost akin to a demigod.

For that reason, Jackson's legend will potentially become a recurring mythological character in the far flung future. The height of his success basically overshadowed the final 15 year media circus that ended his life.

Drake reflects the current clout of the music industry.
