To be precise, it was revealed that Gateway is his grandfather; in all likelihood Bishop is only part Australian Aborigine.
He's an aboriginal from Australia

Bishop is black brehs, they created him with the intention of making him the first "black male x-men" team member. He just happen to have a little indian in him, but he's drawn black 9/10. Miles morales is black too.
