If 50 Cent had been murdered in 2005 (or right after "The Massacre") was released.............

This is always a crazy question. People's legacies aren't ballooned after they die. They have to have some significance while alive. If that artist didn't fall off, then they are judged based on their work while living. Pac is highly regarded for many reasons:

1) He died at the height of his popularity

2) He was starring in movies

3) He'd dropped Me Against The World, All Eyez On Me, Thug Life, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., and 2Pacalypse all before his death

4) 7 Day Theory dropped posthumously which turned Pac into a mythical figure. Everybody was creating these crazy conspiracy theories as to why he was alive.

5) More posthumous material surfaced which added validity to conspiracy theories. Those who could care less about the theories praised Pac's work ethic especially after finding out he'd recorded 400 hours of material before his death

6) Controversy. Whether it was controversial political statements, beefing with other artists, the media perpetuating the East/West feud, or people like C. Delores Tucker targeting him. His statements also made people view him as more than just a rapper and more as a revolutionary.

That being said, 50 would've been highly regarded, but not because he died, but because in 2005 he was considered that dude. He would've been placed among the greats because him dying would've sealed his legacy. There'd be nothing to add or take away from what he was doing. It would've been easier to push 50 into that upper echelon because people were already saying crazy things about The Massacre and GRODT.

Anyone in death is going to be regarded higher. It doesn't take a 50 stan say that and only a 50 hater would say otherwise. Regular ass people often get put in higher regard when they die.

It's human nature. How many people right now see so many posts on social media of love and admiration for your friends or family that pass away? Where were those posts the day before? It's not a bad thing. Big, Pac, Pun, are some of my favorite rappers ever. Dilla is one of my favorite producers ever. There's no doubt that their status was elevated after death. I love J Dilla but his MPC would not be in the Smithsonian if he was alive.

The question is to what degree. After The Massacre, if 50 passed, I think he would be in some top 10 lists for mid to late 80's and early 90's babies. I think it would average out around top 15-25 when you include some older and younger heads.

I would agree with that.

this got me thinking about if this happened to most rappers

say dmx got merked in his prime he'd be thought of as an all time great. yet by making more music and staying in the game it somehow tarnished him damn that's cold

mobb deep - another example - if they got ended at their peak theyd be more peoples GOAT
I mean yeah.. if Havoc had died after Infamous, he might be regarded as the greatest producer ever.

man if fifty had died RIGHT before his movie/OST came out (remember he was still near his pinnacle) he would have been in the pac and biggie discussion. dudes woulda been talking about how fifty was "getting into movies" and "hadnt reached his potential" yet.
