They need to focus on making the Infinity Gauntlet story the best it can be before they start thinking about another crossover plot point.

Civil War could happen without Spider-Man and The Fantastic Four but it would require Marvel Studios to add some more heroes at a faster clip to their universe and it would require their movies not to be shiny happy feel good action films (and yes that is what all of the Marvel movies are even the great Winter Soldier despite everyone erroneously buying into that "Its a spy thriller" bullshyt). Civil War would require the MCU becoming a dark, morally grey, overly violent place. And considering Marvel built its billion dollar movie empire not going down that route I would say the odds Disney allowed them to go dark are slim and none.

So if they do it, the 'shiny happy feel good Disney' trope would have to be retired right?

It is most likely not ever gonna happen. Everyone from Fiege to the Russo Brothers have said there are no plans to do Civil War in the movie universe.

Captain America's Avengers vs Iron Man's Avengers :ooh:.

It does seem like they're building up to an eventual Iron Man/Captain America conflict rather than The Infinity Gaunulet storyline in regards to The Avengers :patrice: that entertainment weekly poster of them standing side by side was very telling. A loose adaptation at this moment in time actually makes more sense than one involving Thanos and the gauntlet. I'm starting to think they might just keep Thanos as a villain for cosmic heroes. He's a galactic villain,The Guardians of The Galaxy and The Inhumans should really be the ones stopping him.
