Can someone explain to me what a ''Protected'' draft pick is?

It means we get the Mavs pick unless it's a good pick (top 5), in that case they get to keep it. For fukking Delonte West!

Means we only get it if it falls below a certain threshold. Might be out of the top 3, top 5, or the whole lottery.
