Above the fray.
Fat Joe's career is a testament to what Ice said.
Never owned a Fat Joe album, and I doubt that more than 100 members here have ever purchased one. Yet because Joe has a knack for putting out hit singles, he's relevant in 2023. Years after artists/groups that made good, great, or classic albums around the time Flow Joe dropped are legacy acts.

100%. Who remembers the :wow:when you'd come to the end of a dope track on Side A, hit auto reverse and an even better jam was cued on Side B.

The entire wait, cop the single, get the retail, rip the plastic, pore over the liner notes as it played end to end was an event.

That and not all cuts are meant to be singles, the album experience nailed that perfect as it wasn't about chart chasing but mood elicitation.

To me it seems there is the same amount of talent as there was before but now its spread thinner because everyone can play and the modes of consumption/creation have changed. That says some interesting things about the true nature of this realm for those with the eyes to see but in terms of talent there has been a definite downward trend since the 70s which were the zenith of sheer musicality and skills.
