Looking at Anthony Volpe's metrics, there's still a lot to like about his prospects as a major league hitter.
He makes hard contact. He doesn't drive balls into the ground. And he walks a good amount.
He's been somewhat unlucky on his BABIP but it's not what's driving his numbers down.
The possible issue is that he's either thinking too much or chasing pitches and getting in bad hitters counts...which may be why his K rate is so high.
It's somewhat baffling that his numbers are absolutely horrible against LHP. That's where RHB should shine the most.
What he should do, for the moment anyway, is emulate his hero Derek Jeter and try to go the other way. Or at least up the middle/right-center. Just to re-calibrate himself. Go up there and be aggressive early in the count, but try to hit it to right. Trust his bat and gain some confidence, rather than trying to work the count only to find yourself chasing breaking balls out of the zone and MAYBE getting the occasional walk.
Not counting tonight, Volpe has seen an 0-1 count 121 times. By far the most of any count. Get up there and be aggressive, kid. They are NOT pitching around you.
