George Lucas isn't even aware of the scope of the universe he created. Don't get me wrong I adore the man (n/h) for creating such a universe but in retrospect the flaws of the OG trilogy and prequels make it hard for me to enjoy as much as the EU.

if there's any villain that could have taken the baton from vader as the saga's main villain, it would have been him. another few films of luke facing off against the emperor would have been piff beyond piffery.
