I had a friend that did intelligence.... Got paid well, but the pressure was too much. He got out after 6 years.

I couldn't enlist even if I wanted to because I have surgical hardware in my left ankle, so I would never pass a physical.

How? You talking about CEH? Because I know you have the option of going to hacker school as an IT. Can get networking certs as an IT too. Both clear 6 figures when you leave?
IT is more like Helpdesk at bare minimum. System Administrator at most

CTN is Security/network analyst at bare minimum... Ethical Hacker or Security manager at most

You can dab in both either way

Bro I’m talking about Navy

In the Navy you can get different certs and different jobs regardless if you’re IT or CTN, just for CTN they usually have to know more that A+, Net+, etc.

And there’s no hacker school that I’m aware of. I’ve been through their highest IT school. There are side schools in general but none of its required and at your discretion by your command.

For CTN it is required most likely

Bro that's what I'm talking about too.

So you can go as an IT and get all of the certs that a CTN would get too?

No

I’m saying it depends on your job. Basic IT’s won’t get ANY certs probably.. most of their shyt is on ships

They teach you basic A+ in A-School but you don’t take the exams. I already had my A+ for years before I went into the military.

At most, you will get sent to the c-school where I was sent . The training is called CID Information Systems Technician and Systems Administtrator. Thats where you will get Server certifications, Active Directory, Sec +, CCENT, etc., unless They changed it. I was in the 2nd class they ever had but that was years ago. This was also a C-school not an A-school

CTN’s require you to get Sec+ immediately in A-school unless they changed it. They might get Net+ immediately too. They get taught coding, it was 25 weeks long compared to the IT’s 8 weeks long A-school, and they move FAST. Their A-School is basically IT’s C-School with focusing on different subjects. CTN’s are the ones who conduct red team and blue team exercises for the Navy.

Basically, IT’s get entry level/intermediate training while CTN’s get intermediate-afvanced training

Now what you also get depends on your comman whether you’re IT or CTN. If you’re an IT and your CO wants you to be SEC+ certified, then you study on your own and take it. Or if you want to go through a fiber bootcamp, or learn CCNA through a CCNA bootcamp, they will send you, pay for your exams, etc. If you want to get CISSP you have to convince your LPO/CPO to send you to the course and they will... etc

Navy has no problem training your ass if thats what you want or is required. I was required to pass the C-School before I went to to work for a “3-letter-agency” as my next duty station. Attrition was very low, lost 80% of the class of regular IT’s and know-it-alls.

Attrition is low for CTN’s as well. If you can’t pass that shyt then prepare to be reassigned to another job (most likely IT)

Oh yeah, and if you fail a cert exam more than once you’re out basically

So in short CTN nikkas make more than an IT nikka would with the advanced certifications? How much more do you think? And are cyrptology jobs limited to the government?

Not necessarily either.

I think the average CEH certified or pentester makes about 70k

It all depends on your job, company, resume, location, etc. my friend was an IT on Navy submarines and doesn’t know shyt... I taught him everything in the Navy in fact.

He was my boss at my former company once I got out. He got a new gig at another company making 150k as IT manager.

I don’t want to be a manager and he’s a good shyt talker:yeshrug:

I’m more of a worker bee... I don’t want to be in charge of shyt. I don’t have 4 kids so I’m cool with 70k. My end goal is consulting really.. or working for a consulting firm

So it’s all relative in IT, but yes the higher level certs tend to pay more BUT... My mom for instance only has a CCNA and has been making over 100k for over a decade because she’s in Management :yeshrug:.

She doesn’t even have a bs degree, just worked her way their with experience and hard work, connections, etc. Went from help desk to management. She trains people and they enjoy working for her

And no, crypto and security jobs are definitely not limited to government. Shipboard crypto is defferent too, so don’t get that confused. I would also say don’t chase the money chase what you enjoy doing.
