There are cheap, mom and pop, ethnic restaurants where you can eat like a king on a budget on a first date. I do agree that taking a woman out to a expensive place on the first date isn't smart. I don't know why you singled out male friends, I'd take my homegirl or sister out to eat and they cover their own expenses and sometimes mine as well.
