That's mostly a competitive thing in my case, I have fun being competitive and being challenged, taking it easy ain't fun, might as well not even play the game at this point. If she wanted to spend time with me I'd drop the controller, but other than that I'm playing games as much as I see fit.
As for your second point, I can't disagree with that statement.

Bought a PS3 when the latest Mortal Kombat dropped a few years ago, but that's the only game I own. I use it as a Blu-Ray player now 
I was heavy into arcades growing up, NES, Genesis, Turbografx, Sega CD. Turned into a Command and Conquer and Starcraft nerd for a little while, but I barely pick anything up anymore.

outside of school, video games pretty much consumed my life, i realized i had to let em go or else i'd be even more socially inept / awkward

I dont feel I've missed out on anything. Had the SNES and was spent the best part of my teenage years on the PS, N64 and arcades. When you have friends who challenge you to games it's not a thing. I could go out and get a PS4 but again, not really an interest of mine.
