Classic

Something of lasting worth or with a timeless quality

Yeah, you can know if YOU like it alot on the first listen, but how would know if people will still be talking about it 10 years later a day after it comes out?

I just hate when people use the word "Classic"

The first time I saw Boyz N The Hood, New Jack City, Goodfellas, Training Day and Menace To Society I knew they were classics...

I didn't have to watch them 20 times and wait for a decade to pass to come to this conclusion...

I don't know why music can't be the same way

It seems easier for movies to get the classic stamp, cause you listen to an album 100 times + if it's a classic. You might just watch a classic movie once (like Titanic or Once upon a time in America twice).

It's just in very rare occasions with movies (like early Stanley Kubrick) and shyt like that when you have to wait for decades for the movies to be considered classics. But despite what I've said, I still don't call movies classics. I call them great movies, if I still think they are great movies 10 or 5 years from the point I saw it, If it had social impact, if it was of importance to the movie industry/the artist of making movies and on. Then it's a classic.

There is also different levels of classic

The reason I don't like the word is because it's almost impossible to argue against....

There is personal classics, ethnic classics, regional classics, gender classics and universal classics....

A movie like The Wiz is a classic in every Black household in the ghetto...But it doesn't have the same cache of a classic like Citizen Kane...

If you're from New Orleans.. U.N.L.V.'s first album is a regional classic...But most of the country has no idea who they are...

UGK Riding Dirty is a regional classic...People want to pass Liquid Swords off as a universal classic..But millions of n!ggas where I grew up could give 2 fukks about that album...But since it's a New York release people feel it should be universally accepted as such...

Mexicans bangers feel like Kid Frost has classics...Every Black woman feels the Waiting To Exhale soundtrack is classic..

The word just has way too many variables to be used as a definate..

I still remember visiting Las Vegas for a weekend around the time Chronic 2001 dropped, and it was damn near the only album you heard blasting on the strip.

That shyt to me was the definition of epic. Back home, that's all I heard too. Upon my first listen, I knew that album was something special, it didn't take long afterward for me to know that the album would resonate and ir didn't have to take years.

There are very few instant classics.

I remember the first time I heard Common - Be and I thought right away that shyt was timeless.
