Great movie. Alien abduction meets family turmoil meets crisis of faith.
I disagree heavily with the "wooden acting" OP. The acting, outside of Shyamalan giving himself a cameo as the neighbor, is one of the films biggest strengths.
Phoenix is wonderful (The stand-out imo), but Gibson pulls off that conflicted ex-minister extremely well. The kids are both
fantastic child-actors (Which can make or break a movie). The sheriff plays her part extremely well. Gibson's wife death doesn't come off silly as it could have been.
^ This is wonderful.
People fixate on the "plot holes" that aren't even there.
If they are vulnerable to water, how come they invaded a planet covered in it?
Ummm...because we don't know and never find out anything about them?
People kill me with this critique. The movie never delves into the plans or psychology of the aliens. We get the scene where the son guesses what they are there for and what their temperament might be, but this is his own interpretation of said events. Nevertheless, we never find out what they are doing. Obviously, having mastered interstellar travel and advanced radar tech, you'd have to assume that they are intelligent. At the same time, they aren't wearing anything protective and don't seem like they are particularly concerned. I've always felt like this was some last ditch effort by them, they are basically pulling a "smash and grab" before leaving the planet. Or, maybe this was some sort of rite of passage for a particular class of their species ("Capture an earthling in their natural habitat which is dangerous to you") We don't know. It's not a plot hole because we are never given any reason to assume that they don't know about the dangers of the planet.
If they are so strong, how come that one alien couldn't get out of the broom closet?
Ummm...it did. The alien "trapped" in the closet clearly got out later and attacked his family. It's not a hole. You can question how it got trapped in the first place, or why it didn't immediately bust the door down, but these aren't plot holes, they are questions surrounding that particular aliens motivations (Which, once again, we are never given). The aliens spend the movie doing things carefully and trying to remain hidden to an extent, it seems as though they don't like exerting too much effort when it's unnecessary (The alien that gets his fingers cut off seems to have a personal vendetta at that point, so it's willing to reveal itself out in the open to gibsons family).
I could get into lighting, atmosphere, the sound design, the score, the overall cinematography (When M. Night is "on", he's got the best looking pictures in the business), but I'll just close by saying that THIS... :
...NEVER gets old.
I like watching this movie with the theory in mind that these are demons and not aliens. I believe they state that the "aliens" get defeated by a primitive weapon in the middle east, but never state what the weapon is. I like to think it's holy water, the same reason why the glasses of water around the house hurt the "alien."
Not a perfect theory but the film as is isn't perfect with it's logic for unprotected aliens that die from water on a planet made of 99% water.
Hmm, this is an interesting theory.
The movie uses too much alien imagery and tropes to justify that this isn't an abduction movie.
At the same time....there is also clearly a lot of religious imagery and subtext....
I don't agree with the theory, but it's a fun idea.
I'd say that, the aliens represent
personal demons for all of the characters. They aren't paranormal, but they function as heralds of conflicts within each character. They are "demonic" in that way. But still definitely aliens from outer space.
