You can get a telescoping magnet from hardware or auto parts stores. Or if you can find a neodymium magnet and tie it to a string and drop it inside and fish for your keys.

It’s Sunday, and I was at the grocery store. No magnets in close distance. But when I got home, I made a device from two long tomato stakes, and a wire hanger, and put it in my car. I’m not getting got again.

I was in the parking lot at the grocery store, and I parked over one of these

I was thinking, it would suck to drop your keys or phone in one of those. Then I went shopping. I came out, put my stuff in the trunk, got in the car, and the wind blew the door open. I put my keys in my lap, reached to close the door, and they slid out, and into the drain.

I could see them, so I had hope. I went inside to customer service to see if they could help. They gave me two wire hangers that happened to be laying around, and some tape, and were basically like,
Good luck
:francis:

I untwisted them, and taped them together. They weren’t long enough. I went back inside to return the hangers, but I figured if I could attach the hangers to one of those things used to open cars with keys locked in, I could reach them. I called AAA, explained what happened, and they tried to dispatch someone, but they said the dispatch wouldn’t do it.
:mjcry:

fukk AAA

So I called the police (:sadcam:) and they sent a cop to see if he could do it. He had the hook, but it wasn’t long enough, but I told him about the hangers, and he was convinced it wouldn’t work, and said he didn’t know what to tell me. I asked him to please wait while I went back in to get the hangers and more tape, and he was

:beli:
And I’m thinking:

:dahell:
These are my keys. I’m going to try every possible thing.

I got the hangers and he taped them to the hook, and was able to lift them out.

:ahh:
:whew:

I thanked him, but it’s still fukk the police for acting like I was being unreasonable for wanting to put effort into getting my keys.

Moral of the story, don’t park on those grates.

This really sounds like something that would happen to me. Thank God for keyless entry/start. :wow:

How long did it all take to resolve?

Surprisingly, only about 30 minutes. Once AAA told me to fukk off, the cop was there in 10 minutes.

OP outchea cooperating with the police.

I was praying for a black cop, but the next town over is predominantly white, so I knew what to expect. This is what I get for going to Wegmans and not ShopRite.

Was the cover bolted down , if not why didn't you lift it off :stopitslime:

My car was on top of the grate, and the keys were about 6 feet down, and even if I could have gotten it off, I would have been filthy.
