Neither of your points are really true though.

You have to be a lot more qualified for some non-infantry jobs.

And people that see combat and kill people do talk about it. Not all, but some.

I'm speaking as a former Marine and my experiences. It might be different now. When I was in, I was in the air wing side. Air wing side and infantry side is like two different world's and two different cultures.

When you sign up they ask you to pick 3 jobs you want ranked by the one you want the most first. You can ask for anything but they will like at your asvab scores and if you scores are low or if you MOS is crowded, they will stick you in infantry. I know people that it happened to. And once you become and E5 you had to either apply to be a recruiter or drill instructor.

Semper. When were you in? Were you at Cherry Point?

I see what your saying now. I misunderstood.

Also, at E5 you can also apply for ITB or swimming instructor. I got out as an E-5, didn't want to do paperwork bullshyt.

I was stationed at MCAS Miramar. I got out in 2000. My unit was attached to an air craft carrier group so I felt like I was in the Navy 1/2 the time I was in and why I didn't reinlist. I tried to apply for embassy duty and didn't get it. I got out an E2.. WHY? I had a high enough score to become an E5.. didn't get recommended which was fukked up because when I was deployed on an air craft carrier my NCOIC was in the fukking Navy so it was his call. We never got along so he fukked me. Then... my SGT Major came over from the infantry side and he tried to bring that mentality to the air wing and that shyt wasn't clicking. We didn't get along an eventually, I got caught up and got demoted on some dumb shyt 6 months before I got out.

The thing about the military as well is networking. If you know the right people you can get out being stuck in shytty units, locations. Nobody wanted to come to my unit because we deployed all the fukking time. I didn't reinlist because I didn't want to risk being stuck there for another 4 years or another unit like it.

I did 8 tours during the 60's and 70's. I wish I could have been there when we went into Afghanistan and Iraq.

I'm in the AF working in COMM. I work around so many gunho wannabe's it's sickening. I knew when I decided on the military that I was not built for any type of combat. I chose the AF for that exact reason!

It took me a while to learn how to ignore the trolls and the super patriotic sheep.

It's usually like that, the ones that didn't really see or do shyt have the most shyt to tell everyone. I'm a medic and it's the same way with us. Though some folks who have been through some real shyt do like to talk about shyt they've experienced to anyone and everyone who will listen. When I was in USAREC we had an 11B with 3 tours, 3 or 4 Purple Hearts, and a Bronze Star with a "V" Device that could never STFU.

Here's my question and this is strictly hypothetical even if some of the description may sound familiar....

There are two people, one is a hawkish Oxford scholar who's studied the mid-east region for over two decades, considered an expert on the matter yet has never seen combat. The other is an anti-war log cabin tin foiler who's seen combat.

Based on that description, disregard the message, just focus on the messenger. Who holds more credibility in your eyes?

I''ll give you my answer - the messenger means squat to me. The message and it's logic and reasoning does.
