I don't think a company(nintendo) can thrive trying to be a consumer's 2nd or 3rd console

The best selling console of last generation was also the first to be abandoned when typically the reverse of that is true. You also have to consider that many people who bought a Wii weren't traditional gamers and a high number of them just let the thing sit there after getting bored with Wii Sports. Ultimately the Wii and it's motion controls were a fad and that's a different kind of success than what Microsoft and Sony saw which is time proven success.
