I just realized something. If Lawler is truly out, then Cole is the last link we have left to the Attitude era in terms of commentary. He's the only regular, experienced WWE commentator we have that's consistently been in our ears for over a decade.
Lawler seems to be out...possibly for good for all we know. JR, as great as he still is, is no longer a regular on commentary, and that seems to be by choice for the most part.
I'm thinking WWE is now pretty much forced to produce at least one permanent new star commentator, and not just use part-time ones who we see every now and again, who seem like they're 'filling in'. I'm sorry, I know there are fans of Josh Matthews and Matt Striker (and even Todd Grisham), but let's be honest: none of those guys ever seemed like they were 'mainstay' commentators, like they really connected with the fans the way JR and Lawler did, as well as past legends like Heenan and Monsoon.
Notice that I didn't mention Cole there.
As much as I defend Cole, I'll admit that I never got the feeling that people saw him as anything even close to legendary or respected, even though he spent so much time in the company. That's pretty bad....and I don't think his recent annoying heel run has made things any better.
If Cole is gonna be the 'main' voice of the WWE (especially on Raw) then he either needs to step his image up as a respectable, experienced face play-by-play guy, or he needs someone good to continue to play off of. Possibly both. He was great and truly underrated with Tazz and JBL, as a face play-by-play guy. Hopefully they can find a great heel color man to bring the best out of him again. Hell, they might even need to get JBL back. Even Coach would have been great to play heel to his face, if he wasn't with ESPN.
Whoever they choose, they really should take them seriously and have them at the desk for the long haul. Like it or not, Heenan and Monsoon are out. JR and King are on their way out. We need new voices.
