$93,000 is the top paying district. Boston teachers average $83,000. That's AVERAGE.

You have to get half way down that page in order to get to teachers making under $70,000 a year average.

I know one who just recently retired. He was making $115,000 a year as a Math teacher. He was the head of his department and coached 2 varsity sports. He's going to take home 80% of that for life with his pension.

So is it that teachers don't make enough for what they DO or is it that they don't make shyt?

Or do teachers get paid like shyt in other parts of the country?

Note: These averages are 3 years old. Chances are that they have all gone up. As most teacher raises are tied into standards of living.

Also these numbers are WITH SUMMERS OFF and a 185 day work year

What's the cost of living though? 100k in New York ain't shat

According to this link http://www.cnbc.com/id/100824779 Massachusetts is the 8th worst when it comes to cost of living. New York is 4th.

And yes, 100k ain't shyt in New York City. Though I've had a friend work for Bloomberg and the other worked for TJX. Both made $100k and both lived in Manhattan in decent 1 bedrooms. So it's certainly doable. But not many people try to live in Manhattan on a 100k salary. 100k in White Plains would go a long way though. There are also parts of the city other than Manhattan were 100k would give you a comfortable living.

If Manhattan was yanked out of NY, Back Bay and Beacon Hill yanked out of Boston, and Greenwich yanked out of CT. Cost of living would go down considerably in all of those states.

So saying "Living in New York, 100k isn't great" is inaccurate. "Living in the middle of New York City making 100k isn't comfortable" would be more appropriate.

I thought teachers made 20K per year when I was younger based off calculations from Oregon Trail. The average starting rate for teachers in the Houston area is about 45-47k, some districts as high as 51. That's pretty good money. Plus if you work the summer it's even better. It's a tough job but their union is strong and they make a decent salary.

All of these numbers here are for public schools run by the state. Private teachers make even more in Massachusetts...but they don't have job security (no tenure), raises aren't guaranteed and they aren't protected by any union.
