me either. like 1 dude could really sing and even then, he sounded like a fake version of Dino from H-Town (who I liked more). I swear, its like they make some of these R&B groups just to put some attractive looking people around the lead singer, who is doing all the work (i.e. SWV, 112)
Never thought about it like that, but you're absolutely right. :rip: Dino

every group ever is like that. LOL

That's kinda the point...then the one dude/girl who can sing goes solo. The others are typcailly background singers or play instruments, good dancers, or eye candy.

I think coming in as a group gave you a better chance to succeed back then.

I was ok with em... Just always felt like JD tried to clone Jodeci wit dem nikkaz

shyt, Puff tied to clone Jodeci with Total. JE didnt have no where near the talent Jodeci had. At least with them you had KCi/JoJo singing, Dalvin playing instruments/producing and DeVante producing. And Dalvin/DeVante balanced out the lack of looks the other two didnt have, but the chicks still loved all 4 of them

I dont think anyone tried to copy each other. It was just the times.

But Jodeci DID influence, b/c before them most groups were safe looking like Boyz II Men

yeah the lead always goes solo but in modern R&B, it NEVER works out (except for Beyonce)

back in the day, Teddy P left the Blue Notes and blew up
Lionel Ritchie left the Commodores and blew up
Chaka Khan left Rufus and blew up
MJ told his whole family to fukk off and blew up something serious
Curtis Mayfield left the Impressions and blew up

y'all get the picture

but in the 90s you had groups like En Vogue and all of them batches could sing and they all flopped when they it was time to go solo

I dunno homie, that Jodeci blueprint even trickled down to Dru Hill and Sisqo looked like a weird hybrid of all 4 Jodeci members. Before then, groups from the late 80s-very early 90s looked like Guy with all of the dancing and New Jack sound. And JD is a known biter who tried to throw that west coast/Death Row sound and image on Da Brat and Bow Wow.

True, one thing to keep in mind is, all those people (marvin Gaye was in a group too) were supremely talented. Wrote their own songs, played their own instruments or just were incredible vocalists.

R. Kelly was in like 2 groups before he went solo, Babyface was in a group.....it doesnt work as well nowadays b/c most artists aren't as talented and if they are, they start off solo. Unfortunately, the group concept is dead in R&B. It's not necessary since studio technology allows dudes to sing their own background vocals now and of course no splitting of money is king.

You think any of those B2K cats were even singing background? LOL They were just "there"
