Do you realize that people born in that time period were born into a world were slavery had been a common practice on every continent since the existence of the human species? Even among groups of the same race. There was no mental gymnastics to be performed in their minds, the idea that slavery was an immoral act just barely started taking root in Western society, let alone the rest of the world.

Its not wrong to be disgusted when looking at actions done by societies in the past, but keep in mind that the moral standard of today was not used in deriving moral beliefs or conceptions of justice that existed in past societies.
