Biden doesn't have the votes to make the changes that he wants. Also, he's running out of reconciliation chances as well. Which is probably why he's going with the organization route. But for him not to be out there, for Harris or his wife not to be out there, championing this cause, putting out data, making as big a deal as possible, is a damn failure.

Manchin and Synema are selfish and playing politics. This would get passed if they were not trying to #bothsides the issue. Most likely, they feel they'd lose their seat because of that legislation. Not because their voters would revolt because the bill got passed. But because they think the new voter freedoms from the bill would allow another candidate to take their seats.

You can't ignore the rules. You can't pass bills without 60 votes in the Senate and whatever number is needed in the House. If Manchin and Synema keep voting Republican, then the Dems can't get anything done. Not even reconciliation.

You only need a simple majority in the House and Senate to pass bills. The issue is it takes 60 votes in the Senate to end debate in committee to proceed with a vote. This is where bills die, and this is where Joe Biden refuses to use his bully pulpit to enact rules changes to either 1.) make it more difficult for the minority to filibuster a vote or 2.) carve out an exception for voting rights that would only require a simple majority to invoke cloture. This is how Moscow Mitch was able to get all of his devils on the Supreme Court. Republicans were aligned, so they made the change swiftly with little to no media attention/pushback. Dems are not aligned, therefore this has become a huge kerfuffle that has now led to party activists having to beg in public and some being arrested. Yes, Sinema and Manchin deserve blame, but until I hear a coherent stance from Biden and see some public/private arm twisting of these senators then the blame should lay at his feet for his lack of fight on this issue.

I thought everyone understood expanded absentee voting wasn’t going to continue past Covid. Do I want to see it expanded? Sure. Hell without it Trump would have done even worse so republicans should support it on that basis lol. But it’s absence in many (not all) states in 2022/2024 isn’t going to be a major factor.
