If ID’s were free it would be different, also many poor people don’t have their birth certificate, and it’s expensive and takes a ton of time to replace.

They're free in NC. But the waiting period and lack of access are still hurdles.

Poor people also lack adequate transportation in much of the country outside of the major cities.

But they usually give a few options to get an ID and they're usually the same as required to get a job.

Which, ultimately makes the entire need for a photo ID/ voter ID redundant, but I digress.

The problems with voter ID aren't really about an ID being bad in and of itself..

It's about charging voters to get them, limits on types of ID accepted, the ability to proliferate ID to voters or create mechanisms to keep voters from being blocked if they for example, lose their wallet in the lead up election day.

Also in response to what we've seen in Republican states like here in NC where they closed DMVs in black areas and removed the ability to get same same day IDs from the DMV, etc.

These are things they'd need to fix and normalize if they are to go that route.

Exactly. Creating laws that are a natural rites of passage for white people while failing to acknowledge that the same doesn't apply to other demographics, particularly black voters.
