What we're seeing is them getting what they wanted from the 1960's the ability to do what they want without the federal government intervening..... which is what they wanted since reconstruction, and before that the civil war, all the way back to the revolutionary war. Those state right southern and midwest states all see themselves as little fiefdoms. It's why they always go after the supreme court, because they need them to look away. That's the difference between Dred Scott and Brown vs. The Board of Ed.
What happens each time though is the north cuts funding to those backward states or boycotts them, the people in those states move to northern cities, and the people who stay get fed up of it and start to sabotage the little fiefdoms.
What's different this time is global warming and the 1% aka gilded age 2.0. This continuous back and forth is going to get interrupted with a whole bunch of national disasters, and the leaders in charge are stuck in the pockets of big businesses. The normal scheduled course correction means very little when we're all screwed. What happens if NY is like "We're not sending our normal large tax money because of massive flooding and you know what..... fukk Kentucky and Florida anyway? The Federal Government can get pissed, what are they going to do but print up more money. All it does is weaken everything in a time we should be working together.
Long story short these a$$holes can't see that this won't matter and they are fukking themselves over long term..... again.
