It was the first book to be mass produced by a printing press. Most people were illiterate when such technology came about. If the common man was going to own a book, it was going to be a bible. He would most likely never purchase/own another book in his life. Repeat for a couple of generations, build an army of shops selling "the word of God" and you have yourself nations of illiterates thumping something they literally dont understand.

This is a good take. But in a more general sense, people are gullible. There are lots of unanswered questions about life, the universe, and so on. The Bible, as well as many other religious texts, provides an answer to most of those questions. And since there hasn't been any real demonstrable answers to a lot of these questions, people have and will continue to cling to these stories. Modern science is relatively young, but I think people will look to the Bible for answers less and less as generations go by.

I guess that is why they teach us evolution in school. So when we grow up we think that the bible is bullshyt.

Sunday school has been around longer than teaching evolution..and people still thought the bible was BS before darwin

The bible is so self contradicting that even indiginous tribes used to reject it in Africa and South america ...untill the missionaries built mission schools and got a hold of the children
