It was the first book to be mass produced by a printing press. Most people were illiterate when such technology came about. If the common man was going to own a book, it was going to be a bible. He would most likely never purchase/own another book in his life. Repeat for a couple of generations, build an army of shops selling "the word of God" and you have yourself nations of illiterates thumping something they literally dont understand.

I guess that is why they teach us evolution in school. So when we grow up we think that the bible is bullshyt.
