The term began to fall out of use in the early 19th Century, but was 'resurrected' by P.T. Barnum () and attached to 'White' in America. In the nutshell, the 'White' race was a class created by rich Europeans to enforce social control over non-Europeans and act as a 'buffer' between themselves and slaves in the late 17th Century. This tactic was employed in colonial North America since the tactic of using 'mulattoes' (like in the Caribbean) was not tenable due to logistics. Since there were more Europeans in North America than slaves, to exert their control remotely, rich Europeans enlisted poor, landless Europeans and gave them 'White skin privileges' (voting rights, land, the right to own businesses, etc.) while simultaneously denying those same rights and privileges to those without European ancestry and legal protection.​
