We know about Mali, because there are copious written records about that Kingdom. So for obvious reasons we know less about Kongo due to the lack of written records, but a while back I did some on Kongo and I remember reading that a researcher believed that Kongo's trade contacts may have extended as far inland as as the Swahili City States. The thought stemmed from the fact that some artifacts were found in those city states that were only produced in the Kongo.

It is good stuff either way.

Do you have the source for this? Because this is VERY INTERESTING! And I am a BIG fan of the Swahili coast. Maybe if you have time you can inform us more on the Kongo Kingdom.

Please do not take my post as belittling the Kongo Kingdom. All I'm trying to say is that the Mali Kingdom had a more international reach compared to the KK and dominated the most precious resources at the time(gold/salt). But if you have time PLEASE post in the Kongo Kingdom tread I linked.

I was looking for the article that I referred to, which is why it took me so much time to respond to your other post. I will keep looking for it, because it was an interesting article. I remember reading that Kongo was also a trader of mined minerals; especially copper. It was really good.

As for international reach I don't deny that Mali had one and that the Dyula were not superb traders, but if the researcher was right and Kongo's artifacts were found in the Swahili City States then that means the Kongo had an international reach too. That is why every time that we have a conversation about Kongo I always asked if anyone knew of their connection to other societies. One group that I always sought information on for Kongo were their connections to kingships in modern Uganda.

@Frangala GOOD shyt! And I am glad that we have posters like you joining this section. The DRC has always been a favorite discussion of mines when it comes to modern African discussions. If you have not seen this thread, we actually discuss the potential of Congo. People always say America is like the modern version of the Roman Empire(I disagree because the Romans eliminated their enemies), but to me a stable DRC would be like he second coming of the Mali Empire! Like the DRC the Mali Empire not only had vast resources but controlled 2/3 of the freaking world's gold!!! We see the same thing with the Congo with the international community depending on Congo's vast resources. This to me is why the international community does not want Congo to develop!

Anyways in your opinion what would a completely stable/developed Congo look like?

I disagree. The Congo is a WHOLE other animal with a more messier/complicated history. I actually agree with @MansaMusa with the DRC leaning more towards China. Like @MansaMusa said they just haven't gotten to the "Mao" period yet.

where did u read this or watch info on mali empire?

A lot of Africa reminds me of pre-Communist China, actually.

Vast areas of rural poverty controlled by evil elites who cooperate with foreign exploiters. Brutal security forces who target youth who desire change...

Mao's policies may have killed 60,000,000 Chinese - but at the end of his life, their country was theirs.
You have to remember that many African countries are just colonial borders. China is 90 percent Han.

It isn't there is no national unity or dominant tribe in the whole country. It should be split up along ethnic or linguistic lines.
