There was also Internet groups, like Yahoo, and AOL message boards.

Internet has been around and in use by kids and teenagers for a few decades.
Kids talk to other kids in school, other neighborhood kids, switch schools, have cousins and long-distance friends, etc.

People love sharing bad news about other people - it takes the focus off of their unaccomplished lives + makes them seem up-to-date.
