I also got it from somewhere that he was subletting his apartment from the couple in Mad About You, which I never watched. I think Phoebe's "twin sister" was on that show at some point too, and they did some crossover with Friends as well, so maybe the Mad About You couple were sponsoring everyone else's lavish lifestyles. The real question should be how the Mad About You couple had so much money
