How soon until we get to a Star Trek reality?

Once again, just talking TOS, off the top of my head, Those giant earpieces Uhura used to talk to the crew, video calls don't require a gigantic computer, computing in general rather than those big gigantic obelisks we do similar things(auto-pilot, GPS, Communication) with much smaller technology, Our smartwatches don't teleport us but they aren't gigantic and probably do a lot more than theirs did, Alexa/Siri are more advanced that their counterpart, you can rig those to do essentially everything for you these days

shyt we aren't even that far behind them as far as A.I. and virtual reality go either

Basically we advanced really fast in terms of computing and telecommunications, but are stagnant in terms of space travel/transportation. :yeshrug:

We have ion engines, solar sails, proto-tricorders, and now we have "Computer, make me a sandwich".

Between this and me finding out there's a working Particle Beam Cannon IRL, my sci-fi dreams are coming true. :blessed:

We even now know to create a warp bubble. Granted it would take the power of 50 suns to do it, but we now know it. Alcubierre drive.

How long until we can make a manned spaceship that can get to saturn's moons in years instead of decades?
Earth becoming a utopia and dedication to space exploration?

Because that took a World War that killed 600 million in Star Trek to get to that reality so not in our lifetimes basically. We still fight over dumb shyt like skin color and religion

Humans are dumb, we’ll kill each other off long before reaching that point. Fermi paradox and all

Fast communication on Earth. But we can't make a phone call from the Moon to the Earth and back in the same time as we do here on Earth. I don't even think in as close the time.

NASA has no problem communicating with the moon. Mars would be where we stumble

I didn't say they had a problem communicating with the Moon. I said it would not be fast as making a phone call from Phoenix to Bangladesh. If you can't make a phone call with that type of speed, then I agree Mars would be a real problem.

Even at the speed of light it would take something like 20 minutes to send a message to Mars (and another 20 for a message to get back).

It's physically impossible to make a phone call to Mars. And I don't mean we lack the technology, I mean the laws of physics don't allow it.

It will happen. It will just take some time and ingenuity. In the 1900's alone we made technological jumps and leaps that are crazy when you stop and think about them. Flight. Jet engine. Space flight. Internet. TV. Satellite, etc...Its only a matter of time. We have come this far, why turn back now?

We would also need to discover a few more technologies as well. Gravity in outer space does't exist. We would need some type of tech to create artificial gravity. Our ships would also need a really good plasma type shielding system. We would smash into all type of debris and and rocks that could tear through a ship. So we would need a really good shielding system. And we would also need a great artificially intelligent piloting system that would know how to avoid collision into asteroid belts, and other large bodies.

But it could happen.

We got tractor beams. Let's goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :blessed:

A tractor beam—a special beam of electromagnetic radiation that draws particles toward it instead of pushing them away—might be a concept straight from Star Trek, but scientists from the Australian Research Council’s Centre of Excellence for Transformative Meta-Optical Systems (TMOS) have recently taken steps toward a more portable way to generate one in real life.

The Melbourne-based research team says that this could lead to better, less invasive technology that could perform a biopsy without the cell trauma caused even by the smallest handheld tweezers or needles. The team’s paper appears now in the peer-reviewed journal ACS Photonics (from the American Chemical Society).

While “tractor beam” makes us think of science fiction and intergalactic tow trucks, the most realistic application of a near-future tractor beam is in healthcare. Today, people who need biopsies are subjected to, at the very least, a needle wide enough to take a sample of cells. Often, the procedures are more involved (like those that involve handheld forceps) and leave more tissue damage in their wake. These procedures are very safe and essential, but medical care with less or no cutting is almost always safer and less painful than what came before.
