How random and pointless was Moonwalker?

This movie is pretty pointless looking back on it, just jumped from one random scene to the next. Opens up with MJ in concert, end with him Transforming into a triple changer and saving children from drugs
I watched it over and over as a kid though. Was this released in theaters?

It wasn't really supposed to be a cohesive storyline throughout. The Bad and Speed Demon ones are just kinda loosely connected. Just a collection of MJ videos really. I still love it.

My sister and I used to watch and dance to this all the time as kids. It took me a while to be able to watch it all the way through. The ending when he turned into the robot/ship/whatever it was scared the bejeezus out of me the first time I saw it.
