because its the most bootlegged
plus a lot of the best quality music is given out for free via mixtapes, which helps as promotion but backfires because it kind of defers the need to pay for an album when you can get just as much if not more quality music legally[albeit not always] for free online

Because album sales arent a reflection of how influential hiphop is. You cant equate the influence of rap music by album sales in the last Couple years when the influences from the last 3 decades are obvious. Not to mention the influences of rap music are present in a lot of popular music on the market. Just, stop.

The fact that guys like Wayne, Kanye, Nas, J Cole, Jay-Z sell what they do is impressive in this age. Piracy is ingrained in the culture of people now, especially teenagers who have never bought an album in their lives.

The reason people who have hot singles go wood, is because you don't have to buy the album to hear the single any more. Go to youtube, listen to the single a million times.. no reason to buy the album.

As for releasing free albums.. what better way to build your following than that? Wiz Khalifa put out free, album quality mixtapes for years and it's what helped him get signed to atlantic and become one of the most popular artists in the game.

Mixtapes are only needed to be put on. Once you dropped a successful album that is quality with good sales, mixtapes should be at a bare minimum. You gotta make your fanbase miss you for a bit, and then drop heat to re-affirm your status.

Think about this...

When was the last time you heard of Britney or Taylor swift dropping a mixtape?

hip hop consumes more music on average than any other genre... bootlegging is an accepted part of the culture now.

you don't put out something every few months...we aint fukking with you no more.

Popular artists in other genres flop too. There are a handful of artists from each genre that sell consistently. In recent years, few artists outside of Rihanna, Kanye West, Jay Z, Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Drake, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and Taylor Swift consistently do decent to huge numbers. There's a few artists that come out of nowhere and do impressive numbers like Adele's sophomore album, 21, Lionel Richie having his biggest album in years, and more recently that Mumford & Sons album selling 600K.

Rap is still influential because elements of rap are still a major part of other genres whether it's using Hip Hop producers, featuring rappers, or artists from other genres attempting to rap on their tracks.

It is not stupid when you make most of your money off shows. Mixtapes proved you with buzz to get shows

Guess you ain't see Carly Rae Jespen's sales...

If you look at a sales chart Hip Hop ain't doin' worse than any other genre. Only the biggest superstars do numbers, everyone else...:manny:

But not giving out so much free music wouldn't hurt. Hip hop fans are some spoiled, entitled muthafukkas.
