I didn't start lifting until I got incarcerated and its a lifestyle in there for most people, yea you have the guys who dont lift and the guys who lift every now and then, and the guys who will lift while its warm outside and once it gets cold they won't go back and lift until it gets back cold.
But lifting inside the joint takes alot of stress away and also will keep other prisoners off you 97% of the time,a guy is less likely to get bullied if he is big and strong or either of the two, word travels about who is weak and who is strong in the joint, you don't necessarily need to be big or strong to be left alone but unless you got a helluva reputation proving your toughness you better get yo ass in that weight pit.
Guys would ride in and prisoners would size them up all the time, pointing out which ones they thought was soft or who they were gonna Rob,and also the guys they thought would be a challenge if they decided to step to them.
I remenber once when some guys rode in,and as usual guys were sizing them up and what not and I'll never forget this one guy who went by the nickname Row,he was about 5'8 225 pounds super solid, and when guys rode in guys always talk shyt, because that's just what they do from afar,it could be Brock lesnar getting off that bus and guys will still talk shyt, but the thing is will they still talk that shyt once you get ON the yard.
So Row goes and gets situated and what not,and the next day he comes on the yard and guys are looking at him to see what he's about far as the pit, now obviously he's strong because he's wide as a fridgerator,he goes to the flat and warms up then bits 225 43 times, then hits 435 for one rep, so right there guys were looking like
He then goes and squats 315 for 22 reps and one reps 440
And goes and deadlifts 545
And Row was a legend from there til he was reeasedt a few years later.
But right there it told me that if you strong and carry yourself with a confidence NOBODY gonna fukk with you in there and that's what made me start working out.
But it saved me because it kept me outta trouble, because you gotta stay outta trouble to lift, and it taught me self discipline far as taking care of my body, but it also saved my life in a way because I didn't have any problems after my first year once I started getting stronger and putting on weight.
Lotta guys get bullied in there and it fukks with they mental, but it's every man for themselves and my advice go guys who were new was to lift and eat man.
