As with most things, everything has been inflated posthumously. Bernie was funny no doubt, but the picture being painted now——Kings of comedy was Bernie and 3 unfunny random nggas—-is severely flawed
I’m old enough to remember when Steve Harvey was the one with a solo comedy special, he represented the culture, and we all gathered around to watch and he was funny af. This is like 96
And when comedy view was THE premier show, DL Highlet was must see tv as the host the way he got at people I. Thr audience was 1 of 1
And when Kings of comedy dropped yea ‘him downstairs’ was a top moment, but so was ‘the band played on …what black band you know’. Nggas was doin the cord plug Steve did. And ‘if 1 of us start runnin we all runnin’ by Cedric was A+i I remember being in college at the time and we was acting that out
So yea Bernie is a icon but the whole ‘we gotta prop up Bernie and shyt on the other dudes’ is tacky and likely done by people who weren’t even outside during that time and maybe not even alive

Being the best of the Kings of Comedy automatically made him top 10 honestly.
I kind of look at Kings Of Comedy as his “special” even though its the four of them and they were all hilarious Bernie stole the show and it was his springboard to superstardom
After Kings Of Comedy he took off like a rocket. Bernie Mac Show, the Oceans series, Transformers. He didn’t really “need” a special because it was like the cross over audience (white folks) found out over night what black folks had known a decade previously, that Bernie was THAT dude.
Also i’m not sure how much he continued to do standup after he blew up. Correct me if i’m wrong but it seems that once The Bernie Mac show blew up he didn’t really dip into the standup/touring bag that much. Or at least as compared to contemporaries like DL Hughley and Cedric.
This is a good point. I think the “White people always” type jokes peaked with Chris Rock. He squeezed every ounce of funny out of that setup that could a comic could get. DL did it a bit too but he never made it the basis of his ENTIRE act.

Especially because people don’t give the show he had credit for being as funny as it was while transitioning to a broader audience.

IMHO he was just a tier below and on his way. Had he lived, I could really see him ending up in the GOAT conversation. Top 10 is not a big reach.

Bernie Mac is in my top 5. Up there with Patrice Oneal.
In general? 15-20 range
Not in same level of Chappelle, Rock, Murphy, Martin, Jamie Foxx, Patrice O’Neal etc

2 of my faves in my Top 5 comedians.
Bernie is funnier as a standup than Jamie and i’d argue Patrice too.
And thats no diss to those two, their world class talents but Bernie a notch above them in terms of stage presence and talent. Murphy, Pryor, Rock and Chappelle are GODS and shouldn’t be compared to anyone.
